A field guide to the single most-photographed object in the San Juans — and the hours of the year it is quiet.

Bridal Veil Falls freezes solidly only once a decade, but partially every winter. We walked it on the first Tuesday in January — thirteen below zero, with the north face looking like a poured glass.

Most visitors see the falls once, from Highway 145, and move on. This is the case for looking twice. We have catalogued the light at five different hours, across four seasons, so you do not have to.

The best day of the year, if you are counting, is a Thursday in the third week of September. The aspens begin gold; the water runs clear; there is no one there.
